J.D. Carter, 88, of Abilene, died Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Hendrick Medical Center.
The son of Sara Anna (Stewart) and Ernest C. Carter, J.D. was born on July 11, 1924 in Ovalo, Texas. A lifelong resident of Taylor County, Texas, he moved from Tuscola to Abilene in 1942. J.D. married Frances Jo Forrester on August 1, 1942 in Abilene.
J.D. served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
J.D. had worked for International Harvester, GMC Trucks, Hudson Car Dealership, Manley Pontiac, and E.L. Thornton Studebaker all prior to starting his own business, J.D. Carter Garage, which he owned and operated for 30 years from 1959 until his retirement in 1989.
He was a longtime member of First Christian Church in Abilene.
His parents and three brothers, C.W. Carter, M.L. Carter and Bobby Lee Carter preceded J.D. in death.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 71 years, Frances Jo Carter, and daughter, Vicky Lynn Stalls and husband Joe, all of Abilene; grandson, Todd Faulks; granddaughter, Tiffany Lynn Hines; and great-grandson, Michael Shane Grayson, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2013 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, officiated by Tommy Spain and Joe Stalls. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
Serving as pallbearers will be Todd Faulks, Troy Lee Carter, Calvin Carter, Avan Carter, Darrell Carter and Monty Forrester.
