Iva Wallace Black, RN, 82, died Sunday, August 9, 2009, at a nursing center in Abilene, Texas
Iva was born in Hamlin, Texas on September 18, 1926 to Floyd Wallace and Lota (Morris) Wallace. She graduated from Hamlin High School then entered Hendrick Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1944. She was in the 1944 class of the United States Cadet Nursing Corps, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1947. She worked at Hendrick Medical Center over 40 years as a head nurse, then supervisor, and in the 1970's as Director of Staffing. Mrs. Black retired from Hendrick in May 1996, at that time working in Social Services/ Case Management as the only RN working as a Discharge Planner.
Iva married Joe Black on September 6, 1947 and they made Abilene their home. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother Othell Wallace, and sister Inez Mixon,
Mrs. Black is survived by her daughter Brenda Black Krick of Ovalo and granddaughter Ashley Jordan Krick of North Hollywood, CA. She is also survived by sisters, Eva Loo of Beaverton, Oregon, and Linda Cook of Abilene; brothers, Dwight Wallace of Dallas, and David Wallace of San Antonio; and sister-in- law, Pat Wallace of Abilene.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Lynn Robinson and Marcia, the staff of Express Medical Supply, and Abilene Adult Day Care.

Mrs. Black always believed nursing was a career not measured in years but in moments.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 13, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Mrs. Black will be cremated, and interment will follow at a later date.
