Homer D. Harendt, of Abilene, died Sunday, August 26, 2007 at the age of 85. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, August 28 at North Park Baptist Church, under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Rev. Louis Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at North Park Baptist Church, 1525 Anson Avenue.
Homer was born March 20, 1922 in Whiteflat, Texas to William Fred Harendt and Cora (Massey) Harendt. He graduated from Wylie High School and attended Draughan's Business College. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Homer married Loneta "Neta" Lewis October 10, 1944 in Nolan, Texas. She preceded him in death January 17, 2003. Homer owned and operated Harendt Construction from 1971 until 2005. Previously, he was employed by Cobb Lumber Company.
February 21, 2004, Homer married Mildred Josephine "Joey" Polk in Abilene, Texas. He was a very active member of North Park Baptist Church. Homer served as a deacon, treasurer, Chairman of the Deacon's Committee, and as Sunday School Superintendent. He also served on the board at The Big Country Baptist Assembly at Leuders.
Homer was preceded in death by his first wife, Loneta; his parents, William and Cora Harendt; five brothers, including his infant twin brother, Hugh E. Harendt, infant brother, Edgar R. Harendt, Gene Harendt, Floys Harendt, and Tommie Harendt; four sisters, Bessie Martin, Myrtle Deatherage, Freda Deatherage, and Frances Henslee; and his foster parents, Ray and Kate Causseaux.
Homer is survived by his wife, Joey Clecker Harendt, of Abilene; one daughter, Deona Fleming and husband Danny, of Abilene; one son, Mike Harendt and wife Susie, of Lubbock; his nephew, that he raised as his son, Fred Herendt and wife Debbie, of Abilene; two sisters, Mae Thomas of Clyde and Faye Oliver of Sherman; five grandchildren, Lance Fleming and wife Jill, of Abilene, Laurie Briner and husband John of San Antonio, Tommy Loveless of Lubbock, Tim Harendt of Dallas, and Tyler Harendt, of Lubbock; four great-grandchildren, Rex and Ashley Fleming of Abilene, Harry Briner of San Antonio, and Noah Loveless of Lubbock.
Lance Fleming, Tommy Loveless, Tim Harendt, Tyler Harendt, John Briner and Ken Deatherage will serve as pallbearers.
