Helen Frances Wommack, 87, also known as Mema to her grandchildren, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2014, at Windcrest Alzheimers Care Center in Abilene, Texas.
She had been a resident of Abilene since 1952 when she moved here with Everett W. Wommack, her husband of 32 years.
Helen was born on December 8, 1926 in Fort Worth, Texas to Gladys Monette (Helms) and John Robert Gibbs. She was the oldest of six children, her siblings being James, Betty, Bobby, Janelle, and John Allen. She attended schools in Fort Worth where in high school she was an accomplished track star.
In 1949 she married Everett Winard Wommack in Fort Worth. They began marriage living in an efficiency behind Everett’s mother’s house on 7th Street where they experience the big flood of 1949. They began a family giving birth to Ronnie (1950), Robert (1952), and Becky (1955).
In 1953 they moved to Abilene and bought a house on Woodlawn Street where they resided for many years until 2012 when Helen became a resident of Royal Estates Assisted Living.
During her life on Woodlawn, Helen and Everett became “parents” to many other kids, friends and neighbors. Helen was known as the “short-order cook” and Everett as the “activities provider.” They were the Ozzie and Harriet of Woodlawn. Everett died suddenly in 1980 at age 63. Helen from that point on was never interested in remarriage or romance, and focused her love on family. She often said she could never find anyone like Everett. Today I am certain they are dancing.
Helen was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.
Helen is survived by her three children, Ronald Everett of Dallas, Robert Wendell of Abilene, and Becky Ann Childress of Abilene; seven grandchildren, Amy Lovell, Adam Wommack, Brooke Paschall, Richard Wommack, Cody Childress, Dusty Childress and Lacy Childress; and eleven great-grandchildren. Survivors also include a brother, James Gibbs, and a sister, Betty Crawford, both of Fort Worth.
Visitation for Helen will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 29, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 30, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kevin Kennedy officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
