Helen Cox, 81, died Sunday, June 28, 2009, in Abilene, Texas.
Private graveside services will be held for family. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with Dr. Eduardo Rivera and Rev. Archie Echols. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
May 13, 1928, Helen was born in Merkel, Texas to the late Bill Childers and Odessa (Smith) Childers. She graduated from high school in Cisco, Texas, and attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas. On October 18, 1947, Helen married Alvis Ray Cox in Cisco, Texas. In 1954, they moved to Abilene from Oklahoma. Helen most of all loved her family and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and Bridge Clubs. She loved to travel and square dance.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Alvis Ray Cox on December 6, 2008, and son, Kenneth Cox in 1968. Her parents; a brother, Victor Childers; and sister, Dorothy Chaney, also preceded her in death.
Helen is survived by two daughters, Sharon Summers and her husband Don, and Suzette Buchanan and her husband Kenny, all of Abilene; and grandson, Seth Summers and his wife Elaine of Abilene. Survivors also include one brother-in-law, W. E. Chaney of San Angelo; sisters-in-law, Jeanne Childers of Rising Star, Texas, Mary Jo Cope and husband Alton of Garden City, Texas, Carolyn Cox of Lamesa, and Frances Mills and husband John of Midland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
