Hazel Thomas, 92, of Abilene, passed away Saturday, October 3, 2009 at a local hospital. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, October 6, at Ft. Phantom Baptist Church. Pastors Mike Bradford, Bill Dixon and Dave Douglas will officiate. Burial will follow at Central Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Monday at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
July 20, 1917, Hazel was born in Hawley, Texas to Eugene and Margaret (Howard) Maserang. She married Elmer Thomas on October 7, 1933 in Jones County. Hazel lived all of her life in the Big Country area. She was a member of Ft. Phantom Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter, Elveta McClatchey; three brothers, Henry, Bill and Howard Maserang; five sisters, Myrtle Presswood, Grace Riggs, Elizabeth Gray, Blanch Wood and Lena Davis; and one granddaughter, Carla Sugar.
Hazel is survived by four children, Joyce Boaz and husband Eugene, of Abilene, Roy Thomas and wife Dawn, of Morrow, Ohio, David Thomas and wife Deborah, of Midland, Sherrie Harrell and husband David, also of Midland; one son-in-law, Charles McClatchey, of Hawley; one sister-in-law, Ona Mae Maserang, of Abernathy; as well as nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
