Harry Eugene Campbell

Harry Eugene Campbell, of Abilene, formerly of Venus, Texas, passed away Thursday, October 30, 2008 at the age of 95. Graveside services will be today, Saturday, November 1, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Laurel Land Cemetery in Dallas, Texas, under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. David Tarbet will officiate. H.E. (Gene) was born November 15, 1912 in Dayton, Ohio to Homer and Emily Ann Campbell. He left high school in the 10th grade to work at Texas & Pacific Railroad. During that time he attended night school in Dallas, Texas and studied accounting courses by mail. May 5, 1934, Gene married Virginia Lee Carlisle Campbell in Durante, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on October 16, 2006. Gene worked as the Chief Traveling Auditor for Missouri Pacific Railroad (formerly Texas & Pacific Railroad) and Campbell Bookkeeping. While living in Venus, Texas, Gene served as the Mayor and began the Meals on Wheels organization. He was the President of the Dad's Club. Gene was a member of the Johnson County Committee on Aging and was a defensive driving teacher for the AARP. He was also a lifetime member, for over 50 years, of the Masonic Lodge. He was also a former Elder of the Church of Christ in Venus, as well as a bible class teacher. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emily Ann and Homer Campbell; his wife of 72 years, Virginia Carlisle Campbell; one sister, Grace Eleanor Campbell; one sister-in-law, Mary Carlisle Tippens; and three brothers-in-law, J.B. Carlisle, Jr., Robert Carlisle and Joe Carlisle. Gene is survived by one daughter, Jo Anne Jamison and her husband Fred, of Abilene; three grandchildren, Jerri Jamison Adams and her husband Butch, of Blue Ridge, Virginia, Jenni Jamison Priest and her husband Ed, of Abilene, and Fred Jamison III, also of Abilene; four great-grandchildren, Emily and William Adams, of Blue Ridge, Virginia, and Parker and Creede Jamison, of Abilene. He is also survived by four brothers-in-law, Charles Carlisle, of Dallas, Texas, David Carlisle and wife Dorothy, of California, Randolph Carlisle and wife Bess, of Midlothian, Texas, and Walter Carlisle and wife Lula, also of Midlothian, Texas.
