Sgt. 1st Class Harold (Morty) Boyd, III, U.S. Army, 36, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Funeral services, with full military honors, will be at 1:00 pm Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Burial will follow in the Tye Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Monday at the funeral home.
Morty was born in Abilene, Texas on August 29, 1972 to Harold Morton Boyd, Jr. and Phyllis Hodges Boyd. He attended school in Tye and in Merkel and graduated from Merkel High School in 1991. After graduating from high school, Morty joined the U.S. Army. After serving for four years, Morty left the Army and moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where he resided for three years. He moved back to Merkel and worked for West Texas Utilities in the appliance repair department. After working for WTU for three years, he re-enlisted in the service. Morty was currently serving in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Bragg Army Base in Fayetteville, North Carolina at the time of his death. He was with the U.S. Army Special Forces Command-Green Berets and had served several tours in Iraq.
Morty is survived by his parents, Harold and Phyllis Boyd, of Tye; his wife, Celeste Boyd, of Hope Mills, North Carolina; two sons, Wyatt and Garrett Boyd and one daughter, Kahila Welch, all of Hope Mills, North Carolina; two sisters, Stephanie Lynn Lebowitz and her husband Scott, of Merkel, Stacy Holan and husband Waylon, of Wichita Falls; one uncle, Keith Hodges, of Little Rock, Arkansas; one aunt, Sandra Roath, of Tye and his grandfather, Dennis C. Hodges, of Abilene.
