Gus August Glenewinkel, Jr., 86, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2009, in Big Spring, Texas after a lengthy illness.
He was born near Merkel, Texas to Gus August Glenewinkel, Sr. and Martha Lappard Glenewinkel on July 21, 1923. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II (February 4, 1943 to November 13, 1945), having served at Omaha Beach. Gus was the recipient of a Purple Heart Award.
Gus was a diesel mechanic for Pride Refinery until his retirement. He was a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church.
Gus was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Cole Glenewinkel, on December 9, 2008; his parents; a sister, Mary Ann Myers, and a brother, David Glenewinkel.
Survivors include his stepdaughter, Carolyn Martin and husband, Jerrell, of Buffalo Gap; two step-grandsons, Larry Martin and wife, Lorrie, of Robert Lee, and Ed Martin and wife, Maria, of Dallas; two step-great-grandsons, Shannon Martin of Sweetwater and Chad Martin of Robert Lee; and brother, John Glenewinkel and wife, Bea, of Abilene, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with military honors provided will be 2:00 p.m. Monday in Elmwood Memorial Park in the Garden of Memories Section, with Don Cauble officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene.
