Grady Gene Barr, 93, of Abilene, passed away on Saturday December 9, 2023, in Abilene.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at The Church of the Heavenly Rest, Episcopal, 602 Meander St., with the Rector David Romanik officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home.
Grady was born in Clyde, TX to Lloyd and Annie Barr on February 20, 1930. He went through school in Clyde, graduating in 1947. He married Ann Stranathan on July 31, 1981, in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, and enjoyed 32 wonderful years of marriage, until her passing in 2013. Grady founded Barr Roofing Company in 1964 and operated his business until his retirement in 2007. He also proudly served as Mayor of Abilene from 1999 until 2004. Grady served in many civic organizations over the years. He was on the board for The Community Foundation, DCOA, Hendrick Home for Children, Midwest Roofing Contractors Association, President of the Chamber of Commerce, and was a charter member of The Roofing Contractor’s Association of Texas. When he wasn’t working and serving the community Grady enjoyed bird hunting, spending time on Lake Fort Phantom, gardening, and most importantly spending time with his beloved family.
Grady was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Annie Barr, his wife Ann, as well as four brothers and four sisters.
Grady is survived by his son Jim Barr and wife Sue of Abilene, TX, daughter Brenda Meckley and husband Jim of Flower Mound, TX, brother Kenneth Barr and wife Elizabeth, stepchildren Lee Henson (Laura), Carter Henson (Michelle), Edward Henson (Melissa), and Ann Hicks (Billy), as well as 20 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Bobby Wolfe, Mike Young, Bill Senter, H.C. Zachry, and Kenneth Barr.
Memorials may be given to Church of the Heavenly Rest, Episcopal, The Community Foundation of Abilene, or Hendrick Home for Children.
