Grace Gardner McClendon, 102, passed away August 5, 2007.
She was born February 24, 1905 in Arkansas City, Kansas to Harry and Ida Gardner. She moved to Amarillo when she was 4 years old. After her marriage in 1932, Grace and her husband lived in several West Texas cities until World War II. They spent the war years in Atlanta, Georgia where Mr. McClendon was engaged in an essential war time industry. In 1947, she moved with her family to Lamesa, Texas where she lived until 1982. She lived in Abilene for the last 25 years.
Grace is preceded in death by her husband Hoyt in 1977; a grandson, Rob Moore in 1984; and a great-grand daughter, Callie Goolsby in 1991.
Mrs. McClendon is survived by two daughters; Sue Goolsby of Abilene and Gloria Moore and her husband, Bruce. A son, Jerry McClendon of Austin. She is also survived by a sister Marie Meredith of Alexandria, Virginia, four grandsons, as well as one great-granddaughter and three great-grandsons.
Although not a public person, her caring nature and wit were highly prized by her family and those fortunate enough to know her. A women more of the home than the world, her tastes neverless ranged from her love for the Dallas Cowboys to trips to Las Vegas. Her sense of humor and beautiful smile will be missed.
The burial and Memorial Service will be held in Lamesa, Texas at a later date under the direction of the Hamil Family Funeral Service, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
