Gloria Gill Sue Bentley

1922 — December 1, 2006

Dodie Gloria Gill Bentley died December 1, 2006, after a brief illness. She is survived by her husband, Sonny C. E. Bentley, daughter, Kitty Bentley Thomas, granddaughters, Sydney Thomas, Laurel, Emma and Claire Bentley, niece, Diane Henry, nephew, Bishop Emeritus, Claude Payne, nephews, Johnny and Jerry Fitzhugh, great-nephews, Justin, Jordan and Graham Henry, dog, Sake-tu and cat, Salvadora Dolly. Dodie was preceded in death by her sons, Jon Gill and Perry Bentley. After graduating from McMurry University with a BA in Art, and upon Sonnys return from the service, the two married October 9, 1943. Sonny went to work for Dodies father, C. W. Gill, at Abilene Savings, while Dodie became a full time mother rearing their three children. She volunteered at the Heavenly Rest Thrift House, was a supporter of the West Texas Rehab Center, Los Aficionados, and numerous arts organizations. She was also a rabid supporter of a number of retail establishments, both locally and abroad. Dodie was happiest when her house was full: surrounded by family, bright colors and Frank Sinatra music. Everyone felt welcome in Dodies house. She will be remembered for her kind spirit and genuine love for her family, friends and pets. A memorial service will be held at Heavenly Rest Episcopal Church at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 4 under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Perry Bentley Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation of Abilene, (325) 676-9501, or the Jon G. Bentley Memorial Endowment through the Central New Mexico Community College Foundation, 525 Buena Vista SE, Alburquerque., NM 87106.
