Glenn A. Rucker, 85, of Abilene, died Thursday, November 25, 2010 at a local hospital. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 27, 2010 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. His cousin, Rev. Harold Rucker will officiate, assisted by Rev. Bob Cheatham. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 pm Friday at the funeral home.
Glenn was born March 19, 1925, in Taylor County, Texas to Fred Almon Rucker and Jessie Irene (Mathis) Rucker. He grew up in Abilene and attended Abilene High School until he was called to serve his country during World War II. After serving for 2 ½ years in the Merchant Marines, Glenn returned to Abilene and to school where he graduated from Abilene Christian High School.
June 8, 1948, Glenn married Margaret Routh in Ballinger, Texas. He worked for Halliburton as a truck driver for 18 years. He then continued driving a truck for Oil Transport before retiring after 22 years of service. Until shortly before his death, Glenn continued to drive short routes for Fehr Foods. He was an active member of Elmdale Baptist Church for 69 years where he also served as a deacon for 35 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Jessie Rucker, and one brother, Milton M. Rucker. Glenn is survived by his wife, Margaret Rucker, of Abilene; one son, Terry Rucker; one daughter, Melanie McMinn and her husband Clyde, all of Abilene; four grandchildren, Tara Rucker, Tamara Rucker, Gregory McMinn and wife Andrea, Bradley McMinn and wife Hannah; and one great-grandchild, Stone McMinn.
The family requests that memorials be made to the building fund at Elmdale Baptist Church, 233 South Elmdale Rd., Abilene, Texas 79602; or to Hendrick Home for Children, 2758 Jeanette, Abilene, Texas 79602.
