Glenn R. Lawrence

Glenn Rae Lawrence, age 74, of Abilene, Texas, passed away on June 9, 2017, with his family by his side.

Visitation will be held at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene, on Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  A short memorial service and burial will follow at the Cross Plains Cemetery on Monday, June 12, 2017 at 10 a.m.   Pallbearers include Thomas Hicks, Kevin Barker, Mike Griffith, Deana Bailey, Gary Thayer, and Royce Lawrence.  Honorary Pallbearers include Billy John Edwards and Joe Edd Boaz.

Glenn was born in Callahan County, Texas to William and Ethel Lawrence on December 7, 1942.  He graduated from Cross Plains High School and attended Abilene Christian College.   He married Ruthie, his wife and partner of 52 years, on May 14, 1965.  Glenn was a loving husband, father, Paw Paw and respected law enforcement officer.  He served his country for six years in the Army National Guard, and served his community for over 46 years as an officer with the Abilene Police Department, and an investigator for the Jones County District Attorney's office.  He loved spending time with his family, horses and cattle.  He was one of the top teamsters in the state of Texas, and was often seen driving his Percheron horses Jerry and Justin with Ruthie by his side.

Glenn attended schools at the FBI Academy and served on the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) Benchmark Committee for the State of Texas.  He was a respected expert in the field of forensics long before the popularity of the TV show CSI.  He was active in his community, serving as a Scoutmaster for Troop 201, on the Eula School Board, Hamby Water Board, past president of the Abilene Police Officers Association, and past president of the Texas Draft Horse Association.  He was a past president and lifetime member of the Texas Division of the International Association for Identification (forensics).  Glenn also served as a volunteer for the Western Heritage Classic and the West Texas Rehab trail rides.

Glenn is lovingly remembered by his wife Ruthie, son Tye and his wife Trebie, grandchildren Taylor and Torie, daughter Tamara Raughton and her husband David, and the rest of his family and friends.  He was known as a true "gentle man."  He was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Ethel, and brother James.
