Glendel (Glen) C. Lang, 95, passed away Monday, January 30, 2023.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 10, at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd.
He was born July 28, 1927 in Merkel, TX to Bertis Frank and Mary Eddith Lang. He attended school in Merkel and Abilene, and worked for the city of Abilene before he received his Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to U.T. he served in the US Navy from 1945 to 1946. After his discharge, he served in the US Navy Seabees from 1954 to 1958.
After receiving his B.S.C.E., Mr. Lang was the City Engineer in Killeen, Director of Public Works in Richardson, and Engineering Director in Plano. He received awards from the Texas Society of Professional Engineers and the Texas Public Works Association.
Glen began playing trombone in Merkel in the sixth grade and continued in Abilene High School. He loved the big band sounds of the 1940s and formed some combos in Abilene, Killeen, Richardson, and Plano. He joined a group of senior citizens, naming themselves “The New Kings of Swing,” in Plano’s Senior Center and played with them over 20 years. They provided music for dancers and listeners every Thursday at noon.
Mr. Lang his survived by his wife, Diana of Abilene; two sisters, Patricia Allen and Carol Lott, several stepchildren and step grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Grace Lea Broxholme.
