Glendel L. Bruce, 78 passed away June 11, 2012 at his home in Abilene, Texas. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday morning at Hwy 36, Church of Christ, Abilene, Texas officiated by Terry Chrane. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park facilitated by The Hamil Family Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening at The Hamil Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
Glendel was born February 8, 1934 in Tyrone, Oklahoma to E.F. and Geraldine Bruce, who preceded him in death. He graduated from Panhandle A&M College, Goodwill, Oklahoma with a degree in business and received his Masters Degree in Business Psychology at Abilene Christian University.
Glendel knew his wife Monna Rae Bruce all of his life and proclaimed his love to her in the second grade by leaving a note in her pig tail. Glendel and Monna Rae celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary last week at South Padre Island where his children and their families vacationed together for 23 years.
Daddy was a wise, loving and generous man. He called all three of his children as an evening ritual. As a Daddy and PaPa teaching his children and grandchildren the principles of life and faith was paramount. All have inherited his work ethic, passion for others and love of Christ which will follow them in generations to come.
He is a master gardener and flower grower as can now be witnessed at the Dudley Place.
He is the third brother of his 5 siblings, James and Sammy Bruce, Farice and Emagine Bruce, Jon and Sharon Bruce, Gwendolyn and Kermit Webb and Sharon and Richard Dent as well as his many loving nieces and nephews.
Glendel has been in the insurance business since 1956 starting as a claims adjuster and manager. In 1972 he became the Director of Purchasing at Abilene Christian University. Glendel joined Perry Hunter Hall, Inc. in 1978. He was the President and equal owner from 1986 - 1999 where he remained active until his death. He was the consummate insurance professional for over 50 years.
Glendel's community service included the following: Board Member at KACU and Taylor County Expo Center and past President of the Independent Insurance Agents of Abilene and the 1st Regional Vice President of the Impact Committee for the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas.
His family loves him and will carry him in their hearts forever: Randa and Henry Bruce Gonzales, Erik and Leah, Weylin and Brody; Jake and Philip and Deborah Bruce, Katy and Hannah, and Les and Jamie Bruce, Lacy, Cory, Alex Anne and Jaxon.
The family is requesting memorials be sent to New Beginnings, 2119 Potosi Road, Abilene, Texas, 79602. This nonprofit is a transitional living facility for women being released from incarceration.
