Glen Dale Hawkins, 84, died Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at an Abilene medical center.
The son of Grace (Roberts) and Burton Hawkins, Glen was born on March 3, 1925 in Greenville, Texas. He was a 1942 graduate of Abilene High School. Glen served in the U. S. Army Air Corps in Italy during World War II (1943-1945) flying B-17's and B-29's. After the war, he attended East Texas State University and Texas A & M University, from which he graduated in 1948.
A mechanical contractor, Mr. Hawkins for 36 years (1948-1984) owned and operated Ace Air Conditioning in Abilene.
Mr. Hawkins had been a longtime contributor and backer of the West Texas Rehabilitation Center from its beginning in the early 1950's. He served on the Cattleman's Round-Up committee from its beginning for many years thereafter.
He was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge, and a life member of the V.F.W. He served on the board of the Taylor County Advisory Juvenile Board, the board of the Abilene Crime Stoppers, and the board as secretary of XXV Investment Group for many years. Mr. Hawkins served as president of the Southern Little League for five years and as a Pony League coach. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
His parents and his sister, Mary Margaret Rish, preceded Glen in death.
Glen is survived by his wife, Ann Hawkins, whom he married on January 27, 1984 in Abilene at the Brook Hollow Christian Church. Survivors also include his three sons, Terry Hawkins and wife, Barbara, of Longview, Jerry Hawkins of Abilene, and Matthew Hawkins and wife, Amy, of Mansfield, Texas; stepdaughter, Frances Baker of Abilene; stepson, Frank Hawk and wife, Rosa, of League City, Texas; brother-in-law, Mike Rish, and niece, Michelle Bergman, both of Florida; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 21, in Buffalo Gap Cemetery with Rev. H. B. Terry, Jr. and Rev. Penny Biddy officiating, directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd. in Abilene. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
