Born September 22, 1925 in Helena, Arkansas on the banks of the Missippippi River, Gerri Denny passed away peacefully Friday morning, March 23, 2007 joining her beloved husband, Bruce Denny, who preceded her in death.
Visitation will be Monday, March 26th, 5:00-7:00 P.M. at 1454 Woodland Trail. A Memorial Service will be held at the Church of the Heavenly Rest at ll: 00 A.M., Tuesday, March 27th, under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
As written in her journal, Gerri begins with the scripture, "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." Ecclesiastes 3:1 She continues to describe her vivid memories of her journey growing up in Arkansas, graduating from Texas State College for Women, meeting a young man who "flipped her heart" while working as a dietitian in a dormitory at Texas Tech, their first date to a football game, her marriage in August of 1948 and her life as a devoted wife and loving mother.
Gerri never met a stranger and would openly greet newcomers at her church where she both worshiped and served as a secretary of the Church of the Heavenly Rest for almost twenty five years. She considered working with several different rectors and the close staff a privilege as they became close friends. She also volunteered at The Thrift House and helped organize many events with her other friends in St. Margaret's Guild and Altar Guild.
Besides serving as President for her P.E.O. Club, Gerri enjoyed her Investment Club, traveling, needlepoint, all kinds of animals and her Friday night evenings with the "Cute Girls". Gerri was considered compassionate, selfless, dedicated and always provided a safe haven and plenty of good hugs. Christmas was especially important to her, and she created many fun traditions for her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Martha and Andy Weatherby of Abilene, Julie and Mike Denny of Abilene and four grandchildren: Mary and Gary Bone, Kate and Matt Haney, Austin Denny and Liz Denny.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Church of the Heavenly Rest, 602 Meander, Abilene, Texas 79602 or Hendrick Hospice Care, 1900 Pine, Abilene, Texas 79601 or to any charity of their choice.
Gerri lived a full life, one for every season. She made time to plant, to heal, to weep, to embrace, to be silent, to speak, to dance, to laugh, but most importantly she made time to love and will be missed.
