Gerald was born December 6, 1955 in Abilene, Texas to Riley and Betty Ewing. Their second child, Gerald was always energetic and enthusiastic, quite the typical boy whose mischievousness often had his parents at wits end. He carried this high energy into all aspects of his life. A graduate of Cooper High School he achieved accolades at school in gymnastics, placing 6th in State one season, and photography. His photography career began following high school and he made his mark as an award-winning photojournalist with the Abilene Reporter News for 23 years. He left the ARN to pursue his freelance career where he concentrated on sports photography.
Gerald had many interests, but his main passion was fishing. A renowned local fisherman, Gerald rarely came home empty handed and tried to make sure his fishing partners caught their limit. Family and friends eagerly anticipated the fish fry that would ensue following a successful fishing expedition. He set lake records at Lake Colorado City for Hybrid in 1985 and Redfish in 1983. Gerald’s other main passion was music. He played lead guitar and was singer and songwriter for his band, Clearlight. As a blues rock band, they enjoyed many years playing at local clubs and those in nearby cities.
Gerald and his drummer, Chuck Newman, wrote many songs together and recorded two; Mistreatin’ Woman and Made Up Blues, both of which received air time on Blues Deluxe, a national radio show.
Gerald enjoyed being a husband and father and as a family he, his wife and their two children, enjoyed camping the most. Boating, fishing, camping, and vacationing in San Antonio were just some of the fun had by him and his loving family.
Gerald was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Ewing.
Gerald is survived by his loving wife, April Ewing, his daughter Michelle Magee and husband Brian, his son MCSN Eric Brann, a Naval Photojournalist, his father Riley Ewing, sister Karen Massey and husband Brian, niece Kristy McNulty, sister Laurie Walker and husband David, aunts, uncles and in-laws who considered him their own, and his spoiled dogs, Mac n Tosh n Piper.
Pallbearers will be Brian Massey, Charlie Hukill, Zee White, Otto Carter, Rick Hollowell, and Dave Price.
In memorial to Gerald, the family would be pleased if you considered donations to Love and Care Ministries, Rescue the Animals or West Texas Rehabilitation Center. Gerald cared greatly for those in need, human or animal.
The family of Gerald wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Modi, Dr. Richey, Dr. Stevenson and Dr. McDonald, his nurses, Linda, Lauren, Nina, Nancy, John and Dick, to All Saints Baylor Hospital, and Big Country Hospice for their care of our loved one.
