George Farmer, 82, of Abilene, died Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at a local hospital. Funeral services, with Dr. Cliff Stewart and Rev. Janice Six officiating, will be at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at the First Central Presbyterian Church. Military honors will follow funeral services at the church. The family will receive friends today, Friday, February 6, 2009, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
George was born November 26, 1926 in Peoria, Illinois to George Farmer, Sr. and Lucile (Jackson) Farmer. He attended Hyde Park High School in Chicago, Illinois. George served in the United States Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1948. During his service time in the Navy, he served in the Pacific Theatre on Destroyers. George married Berta Slocum on February 17, 1952 in Brimfield, Illinois. He joined the United States Air Force in 1953, during which time he served in the Korean Conflict and in Vietnam. In 1968, George retired from the Air Force as a Tech Sergeant at Dyess Air Force Base. He was then employed for 21 years as a Military Sales Contractor for Gooch Packing Company. He was an avid golfer. George enjoyed playing golf at Maxwell Golf Course, where he also served as a Marshall. He was a member of First Central Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Eugene and Jerry Farmer. George is survived by his wife, Berta Farmer, of Abilene; two sons, Michael J. Farmer and his wife Kelly, of Abilene and Mark J. Farmer and his wife Linda, of Ft. Worth; one daughter, Debra J. Farmer, of Abilene; one brother, Philip J.Farmer, of Peoria, Illinois; one sister, Joan Smith, of Santa Cruz, California; four grandchildren, Heather, Jaron, Paige and Brooke Farmer; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
