Dr. G. Norman Weaver, 91, of Abilene, Texas passed away May 1, 2013.
Visitation will be 2-4pm Sunday, May 5 at Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Burial will be 9am, Monday, May 6 at Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene, followed by a Memorial Service at 10:30am at Wesley Court Retirement Community officiated by Rev. Donny Harbers.
G. Norman Weaver was born November 30, 1921 near Enon, Missouri to Gail and Mary (Enloe) Weaver. He met Garnet Elizabeth Newton while attending Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, MO. They were married in 1942. In 2012, he and Garnet celebrated 70 years of marriage with a Caribbean Cruise.
Dr. Weaver was Professor Emeritus, Logsdon School of Theology, Hardin-Simmons University, where he taught for 32 years. He and his wife Garnet served seventeen years as Mission Service Corps volunteers with The Southern Baptist Convention Mission Board, serving in multiple countries on five continents.
Norman earned degrees from Southwest Baptist (College) University; Southwest Missouri University, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; and the University of Missouri. Southwest Baptist University awarded him the Life Service Award.
An ordained Minister and Deacon, Norman served in multiple churches in Missouri, and Fort Worth and Abilene, Texas as Minister of Education, education consultant and interim pastor. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. His teaching career of 42 years ranged from teaching all eight grades in a one room school house in Missouri to his university positions.
Norman’s community involvement included six regional and national religious education organizations, three associations for educators, and The Kiwanis Club. He was also a political party precinct chairman, a blood donor (over 35 gallons), a member of the Parkinson’s Disease Support Group, a Neighborhood Watch host, and leader at the troop and district level in the Boy Scouts of America. For eight years, he developed and directed Tri-College Continuing Education and Vocational Training in Abilene. He enjoyed jogging, gardening, and reading.
Norman was the proud father of three: Ann Kronk, Marcia Wood, and David Weaver; grandfather of six: Timothy Wood, Catherine Kronk, James Weaver, Sarah Wood, Kyle Weaver, and Melody Weaver; and the great-grandfather of Owen and Penelope Wood.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Nila Graham and Carmen Glazner; and one brother, Dorsey Weaver.
