Freddy Joel Fortune, 70, went to be with his Heavenly Father on January 24, 2014 at his residence in Hamby.
Fred was born July 8, 1943 in Cross Plains, Texas to Calvin J. and Mabel Fortune. He moved to Abilene in 1947. He attended elementary school in Elmdale and high school at the original Abilene High School on South 1st. He drove commercial trucks for most of his career, then later proudly drove a special needs bus for Abilene ISD where he was known as “Mr. Fred.”
Fred was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Fred was loved by everyone he met. He was a great and wonderful man. He was always the center of attention and always cracking a joke. I know he will keep Heaven laughing.
He was preceded in death by his father, Calvin J. Fortune, his mother, Mabel Fortune and his granddaughter, Courtney Ann Moore.
Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years , Mary Fortune; daughter Stephanie Moore and husband Rickie of Hamby; son Freddy Lee Fortune and wife Cindy of Hamby; son Dennis Fortune and wife Stephnie of Abilene; one granddaughter Danielle Fortune Favor; seven grandsons, Marcus Fortune, Justin Fortune, Cody Moore, Travis Fortune, Nathan Fortune, Dakota Fortune, and Colton Moore; sisters Bettye and husband A.G. Stout of Abilene, Sylvia and husband Bob Collins of Eula, Eva and husband Jack Langford of Tennessee, and Cathy Newton of Abilene, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 28, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene with Dr. Don Greenway officiating. Interment will follow in Hamby Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers are his seven grandsons. Nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.
