Frank Sayre, of Abilene, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2008. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, April 10, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 11 at Wylie Baptist Church, 6097 Buffalo Gap Road.
Frank Nuell Sayre was born on January 11, 1920, on a ranch north of Santa Fe, New Mexico. His family moved to Breckenridge, Texas, where he grew up working on the family dairy. He joined the army at 19, and he and his twin brother, Arthur Kelley Sayre, soon became the youngest first sergeants' in the U.S. Army. After graduating first in his class at Officers Candidate School, he was assigned as a cryptograph specialist at the Pentagon. Before leaving for his overseas service, he married Millie Parsons of Tampa, Florida. He took part in the Anzio campaign, seeing other service in Italy and North Africa.
After WW II, he and Millie lived in Breckenridge, before moving their family to Eastland, Texas. He transferred his military service to the Texas National Guard, retiring after 20 years with the rank of Major. He worked for Texas Electric Service Company in Eastland, and retired after 37 years as a Division Manager.
He is survived by his wife Millie, his daughter Sharon Riley of Abilene, his son Frank Sayre, Jr., of Hawley, his son James F. Sayre, of Dallas, his brother Edwin M. Sayre, Col. Ret., of Breckenridge, as well as grandchildren, Scott and Amy Terrell, Arthur and Julia Sayre, Brittany and Austin Sayre, and great-grandchildren Alexandra and Symantha Terrell.
