Fonda Mae Day, 87, formerly of Abilene and Anson, died Tuesday, January 25, 2011 in Spring, Texas.
Born on May 17, 1923 in the Elliott Community between Anson and Hawley in Jones County, Texas, Fonda was the daughter of Katie Mae (Woodson) and Stephen Franklin Sims. She graduated of Hawley High School and was a resident of Abilene and Anson most of her life. During World War II, she lived in Watertown, Massachusetts.
Fonda worked for Timex Corporation in Abilene as a watchmaker instructor for 25 years. Prior to working for Timex, she worked for Lankford's Sewing Factory for three years.
A dedicated mother and worker, Fonda was known for being fun. She was a member of 12th & Chestnut Church of Christ, now Southern Hills Church of Christ in Abilene. She was a quilter, gardener, and very good cook. She served as president for various clubs in Anson, including Anson Woman's Club, Jones County Extension Club, and Anson Business and Professional Women's Association.
Fonda was preceded in death by her father, Stephen Franklin Sims; mother, Katie Mae Woodson Sims Ray; three brothers, Carlos Sims, Tony Sims and Otis Sims; sister, Velma Folsom; former husband, Raymond Day; and one great-grandchild.
Survivors include her son, Bill Day and wife Karin of Spring, Texas; two grandchildren, Greg Day and wife Amanda, and Marcia Robinson and husband Scott; three great-grandchildren, Nicole Robinson, Annie Day and Emma Day; sister, Mattie B. Moran of Abilene; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 29, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Graveside services will follow at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in Mount Hope Cemetery in Anson, Texas, officiated by Bill Merkel.
