Eugene Wilson Sumner, 83 years old, passed away on October 9, 2015 at his residence in Abilene, Texas.
Visitation will be Monday, October 12, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 pm at The Hamil Family Funeral Home 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at Potosi Cemetery. His son, Rodney Wilson Sumner, and grandson, Luke Hurst will be conducting the service. Arrangements are by The Hamil Family Funeral Home of Abilene, Texas.
Eugene Wilson Sumner was born in Vernon County, Missouri to Ivan Wilson Sumner and Mildred Elizabeth (Ewing) Sumner on January 16, 1932. He attended school in Richards and Metz, Missouri before graduating in 1950 from Buckner High School in Buckner, Missouri. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the Marines from 1950-1952. He married Ella Sue (Sullins) Sumner on December 19, 1953. For over forty years, he worked in the manufacturing industry with several companies in Missouri and Texas before retiring in 1997. He resided in the Potosi Community for over 40 years before moving to Abilene in 2013. Gene, as his friends would call him, was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. In addition, he loved to play Texas Hold’em and other card games with his poker buddies.
Eugene Wilson Sumner was preceded in death by his parents Ivan Sumner in 1953 and Mildred Sumner in 1993; and brother, Bertis Sumner in 1996.
Eugene Wilson Sumner is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sue Sumner; son, Rodney Sumner of Corpus Christi, Texas, daughter, Vivian Neal and husband Garry Neal of Abilene, daughter, PJ Sumner of Abilene; sister, Freda Hugill and husband H.E. Hugill of Independence, Missouri; five grandsons; Luke and Ann Hurst of Abilene, Jeremy Hurst of Potosi, Kyle and Jacquelyn Sumner of Kyle, Texas, Kolby and Laura Sumner of Natalia, Texas and Keifer and Sha-Lyn Sumner of San Antonio, Texas; and 8 grandchildren: Gracie Hurst, Hannah Hurst, Evan Hurst, Jewels Sumner, Beau Sumner, Sadie Sumner, Gavin Sumner and Briella Sumner.
Pallbearers will be Luke Hurst, Jeremy Hurst, Kyle Sumner, Kolby Sumner, Keifer Sumner and Garry Neal. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Hall, Charles Sullins, and Herbert Hugill.
