Al, 88 of Abilene, passed away on March 13, 2025, in Abilene, Texas.

Visitation will be from 6 PM to 8 PM, March 24, 2025, at The Hamil Family Funeral home located at 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd, Abilene, TX.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, March 25, 2025, at The Hamil Family Funeral home with Tony Truelove officiating. Burial will follow at Shep Cemetery. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

Al was born in Alvin Texas to Oley “Tye” Scates and Leona Scates on March 22, 1936. He went to school in El Centro, California. He married Landi Lou Self on November 1st, 1955, in Imperial Valley, California. They moved to Winters, Texas in 1962. Al served in the United States Navy. While living in Winters, he worked for the City of Winters, West Texas Utilities, and Dry’s Manufacturing for 27 years as the plant superintendent.

Al was preceded in death by his wife Landi Lou Scates; parents, Oley “Tye” Scates and Leona Scates; son, Tommy Wayne Scates; granddaughter, Jenna Young; and sister Sharon Scates Bode.

Al is survived by his daughter, Terrie Young of Ft Worth. Also surviving are grandchildren, Ashley Turner and Husband John of Milwaukee, Crystal Todd and husband Tanner of Plano, Rebecca Ritson of Winters, Marshall Scates and wife Kira of Ballinger, Mandy Saiz and husband Damian of Eden, David Scates and wife Ashley of Levelland, and Mark Scates of Levelland; 21 Great- Grandchildren; 9 Great-Great-Grandchildren; brothers, Tommy Scates and Charles Scates of California; and special friend, Verene Warren of Abilene.

Memorials may be given to the Ben Richey Boys Ranch.
