Elsie Fienup Magee, age 96, died Friday, May 9, 2008 in Abilene. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 14 at the Church of the Heavenly Rest, Episcopal, 602 Meander. The Reverends Scott Mayer, Mary Glover, Rosemary P. Thomas, and Jennifer Rowley will officiate. Lunch will be served in the Parish Hall immediately following. Family members will join friends in the Parish Hall following the burial at the Abilene Municipal Cemetery. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
Elsie was born on August 13, 1911, in St. Louis, Missouri to Henry F. and Anna Margaret Wiegmann Fienup. Trained in Physical Therapy, she arrived by train in Abilene in 1938 to establish the first Physical Therapy Department at Hendrick Memorial Hospital. While working at Hendrick, Elsie met J.D. Magee. The couple married September 21, 1941 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Following WWII, they returned to Abilene, where Dr. Magee resumed his medical practice.
Elsie was a lively and outstanding woman in many ways. Her willingness to give of her time to organizations and friends she loved was evident over the years as she served as President of the Taylor County Women's Medical Auxiliary, the St. Elizabeth's Guild at the Church of the Heavenly Rest and the St. Stephen's Episcopal School Parent's Association. Elsie was one of the early members of the Junior League of Abilene. She was a member of the Parva Investment Club. She joined the Church of the Heavenly Rest in 1938; over the course of the next 70 years she served two terms on the Vestry and was an active volunteer. She will be missed by the Elmwood Sewing Club, with whom she met regularly for over 40 years.
Preceding Elsie in death were her parents, Henry and Anna Fienup; her husband, Dr. J.D. Magee; three brothers, Floyd Fienup, Henry Fienup, Kenneth Fienup; and one sister, Ruth Fienup Koster. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Gregory and husband, Charles, of Houston, and Molly Magee and husband, David Sander, of Quinault, Washington. She is also survived by the sons of the late Jay and Jo Jameson, Reese Jameson and wife, Diane of Denver, Colorado, and Parker Jameson and wife, Paula of Austin, Texas; her brother, Victor Fienup; six grandchildren; Ryan Rivers Vineyard, Robert Magee Vineyard, Sterling Jameson, Marcus Jameson, Mary Dallas Jameson, and Wood Jameson. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including Martha Magee, Lee and Cindy Magee, Wendell Strahan, Wesley Strahan, and Nancy Brunson. She will be missed by the many life-long friends she has made over the years.
