Ellon B. Leggett Monk-Jones

1921 — November 8, 2014

Ellon, 92, of Abilene passed away on Saturday, November 8, 2014. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at South Side Baptist Church. Visitation will be Monday, November 10, 2014 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd. Burial will be at Elmwood Memorial Park. Ellon is survived by her daughter, Vicki Copeland of Abilene and her daughter-in-law, Pam Monk of Princeton. Ellon was the loving “Mamaw” of Marda Monk, Craig and wife, Sheila Copeland, Cody Copeland, Katie Black and husband, James Black, Will and wife, Cathy Monk and Paige Parks. Great-grandchildren, Brianna and Haydn Black, Lucy, Trey and Juliet Monk and Jordan Parks. One great-great-grandchild, Kellyn Parks. Several devoted Nieces and Nephews. Ellon was preceded in death by her husband, Roy C. Monk who passed away on November 11, 1990 and Joe Jones who passed away in 2009; a son, Billy Monk; son-in-law, David Copeland; grandson, Chad Copeland; her father and mother, Jim and Berniece Leggett; sisters, Louise Martin and Billy Jean Leggett; brothers, Raymond (Ray) and Leroy (Jim) Leggett. Ellon and Roy were married on September 16, 1939, and were married for fifty-one years until his death in 1990. They enjoyed traveling and being with their grandchildren. Always following them in their school and sports activities and there when they accepted the Lord and baptized. Each grandchild held a special place in her heart. Ellon married Joe Jones in 2000. During World War II, Ellon worked at Camp Barkley while Roy served overseas. Ellon began working at Farmer’s and Merchant’s Bank, which is now First Financial Bank. Over Ellon’s thirty-seven years with First Financial Bank where she trained many individuals who are still working in the banking industry, including Scott Dueser, whom she was very proud of and called him one of her own. After retirement she enjoyed working part time at First Abilene Federal Credit Union until she retired again in 2012. She also gave back to her community by volunteering with RSVP for over twenty years. Ellon was a founding member of the Reaper’s Sunday School Class where she has been a member of South Side Baptist Church for fifty- seven years. Pallbearers are Bruce Morris, Robert Leggett, Larry Wright, Kevin Monk, Bob Insall, Ronnnie Waddell, Rick Ashley, Jerry Grider, Scott Dueser, Sherman Monk, Kenneth Durham and Arlan McBee. Honorary Pallbearers are the members of the Reaper’s Class of South Side Baptist Church. Donations in memory of Ellon can be made to Rose Park Recreation Center, 2605 S 7th, Abilene, Texas 79605 and South Side Baptist Church Building Fund, 1425 S 7th, Abilene, Texas 79602. Special thoughts to the neighborhood “games night group” for the many evenings of fun and friendship. Special thanks to the nurses and doctors at Hendrick Hospital. They were true care givers.
