Ellis Eugene Wimsatt Sr., 90, of Abilene, passed away Wednesday, November 24, 2010 in a Merkel Nursing Home. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, November 29, 2010 at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene, 7457 West Lake Road. Rev. Rodney Watson will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, November 28, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
Ellis was born in Fixer Kentucky on September 18, 1920 to Thomas Addington Wimsatt and Iva Genevia (Lanham) Wimsatt. He graduated from Davis County High School in Owensboro, Kentucky. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945. During World War II he flew many missions over Germany. Ellis married Robbie McWhorter. She preceded him in death in 1998.
Ellis retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone after a 30 year career as a Repeater Man. He lived in Clyde for 10 years before moving to the nursing center in Merkel. He was an avid golfer and had been a Past Member of the Year of Shady Oaks Golf Course in Baird, Texas. He was also a night watchman at the golf course for a number of years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Robbie Wimsatt; his parents, six sisters and one brother. Ellis is survived by one son, Ellis Eugene Wimsatt Jr. of Burnett; one daughter, Belinda Dutton and her husband Jess of Tuscola; one brother, Leonard Wimsatt of Owensboro, Kentucky; four sisters, Frances Ingersoll of Dallas, Bea Wimsatt of Owensboro, Kentucky, Pauline Galloway and Imogene Tichenor, both of Ontario, Oregon. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Sam Eidson, Ali Eidson, Trey Dutton, Jake Dutton, all of Tuscola, Adriane Peterson and husband Matthew of Delta Junction, Alaska and Chelsea Wimsatt of Florida; two great-grandchildren, Kaden Peterson and Jack Ryan Peterson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Jess Dutton, Sam Eidson, James Eidson, Gary McDowell will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Robbie and Arthur Dutton.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made in honor of Ellis to the American Cancer Society, 209 S. Danville, Bldg. B., Suite 107, Abilene, Texas 79605.
