Ella “Sue” Sumner, 82 years old, passed away on December 4, 2015 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, Texas after a short illness.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 6, 2015 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, December 7, 2015 at Potosi Cemetery. Her son, Rodney Wilson Sumner will be conducting the service.
Ella “Sue” Sumner was born in Gregg County, Texas to Walter Linvel Sullins and Janice Odessie Sullins (Sanders) on February 7, 1933. She was one of seven children born to Walter and Janice Sullins. She attended schools in Texas and Missouri before graduating in 1951 from Central High School in Springville, Missouri. She married Eugene Wilson Sumner on December 19, 1953.
Her primary occupation was as a wife and mother and later in life worked as a bookkeeper at several businesses in Abilene, Texas. She retired in 1995 from Kuykendall Business Systems. She resided in the Potosi Community for over 40 years before moving to Abilene in 2013.
Ella “Sue” Sumner was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Eugene Wilson Sumner, who passed away on October 9, 2015; her parents Walter Sullins in 1977 and Janice Eden in 1992; and sisters Nelda Ann Satterfield in 1994 and Ruth Imogene Waugh in 2012.
Ella “Sue” Sumner is survived by her three children; son, Rodney Sumner of Corpus Christi, Texas, daughter, Vivian Neal and husband Garry Neal of Abilene, daughter, PJ Sumner of Abilene; two sisters, Iladean Pitts of Springfield, Missouri, and Joyce Jarvis of Springfield, Missouri; two brothers Linvel and Pat Sullins of Springfield, Missouri and Charles and Carolyn Sullins of McKinney, Texas; five grandsons; Luke and Ann Hurst of Abilene, Jeremy Hurst of Potosi, Kyle and Jacquelyn Sumner of Kyle, Texas, Kolby and Laura Sumner of Natalia, Texas and Keifer and Sha-Lyn Sumner of San Antonio, Texas; and 8 great-grandchildren: Gracie Hurst, Hannah Hurst, Evan Hurst, Jewels Sumner, Beau Sumner, Sadie Sumner, Gavin Sumner and Briella Sumner. In addition, a dear friend Johnnie Wickham who she considered her best friend and she loved to visit and laugh with her!
Pallbearers will be Luke Hurst, Jeremy Hurst, Kyle Sumner, Kolby Sumner, Keifer Sumner, Evan Hurst and Garry Neal. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Sullins, Linvel Sullins and Jim Waugh.
The family of Ella “Sue” Sumner wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the special care she received from Sabrina with Encompass Home Health and the doctors and nurses and other staff members that served her with compassion and dignity while in hospice at Hendrick Medical Center.
In lieu of flowers the family is asking any memorials be made to Hendrick Hospice Care or the Children’s Miracle Network.
