Liz Stimson, fondly known as Granny Liz to those who loved her, went home to be with Jesus on November 9, 2015 at the age of 93 after a short battle with cancer. Diagnosed on September 29, she was outspoken about her desire for this to be a short journey and it seems as though the Lord graciously heard her prayer and took her home after only 7 weeks. Her sweet life will be celebrated with a visitation from 5-6:30 on Tuesday, November 24, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene, and a Celebration Service at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 25 at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church.
Liz was born on May 24, 1922, to Charlie and Janie Gooch of Harrison, Arkansas. She graduated from high school in Harrison and came to the Texas Panhandle in 1943 during the oil boom living in the communities of Skellytown and White Deer. She moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1972 where she met and married Nolan Stimson in 1979. As Nolan's health began to fail, they moved to Abilene in 1993 to be near her daughter, Brenda Greer, and her family. Soon after arriving in Abilene they became members of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church where Liz's love for serving others was fulfilled by working with the children in the AWANA ministry and building churches with Baptist Church Builders. Upon Nolan's death in 1997 she served regularly for several years at Love and Care Ministries. More recently she enjoyed serving her "elderly" friends by driving them to appointments, taking them shopping, or just checking on and visiting them from time to time. The best word to describe Granny Liz is "Servant." She will be missed by many whom she has served through the years and leaves a legacy of "faith, hope and love . . ." (1 Cor. 13:13)
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nolan, her parents and 9 siblings. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-love, Brenda and Dennis Greer of Abilene; her two grandsons, their wives and children, Lane Greer, his wife Hannah and son Harrison of Marietta, Georgia, and Wes Greer, his wife Suz and their sons Benaiah and Samuel of Littleton, Colorado; her sister, Ruby Gooch Tomlinson of Harrison, Arkansas, several nieces and nephews and many, many friends.
Memorials may be made to the ministries of AWANA, Church Builders, Prime Timers or Nehemiah Project at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church. Liz's family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Toby Williams (who always made her laugh) and his staff, the nurses and staff of Hendrick Medical Center in both the Trauma Center and on Parker 5, the nurses and staff of Wisteria Place Skilled Nursing as well as those in the Nursing Center, Hendrick Hospice Care and the many friends who took time to visit her during her last days.
