Elizabeth Killebrew Leavell
Elizabeth Killebrew Leavell, 86, died Sunday, May 17, 2015 in Abilene, Texas.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene.
The graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 21, in Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the Hillcrest Church of Christ Chapel officiated by David Watlington and Rusty McLen. Arrangements are by The Hamil Family Funeral Home.
Born in Stewart County, Tennessee on July 19, 1928, Elizabeth was the daughter of Alvin Lawrence Killebrew and Wilmoth Pearl Ellis Killebrew. She started school in Big Rock, Tennessee and graduated from Trenton High School in Trenton, Kentucky. She attended David Lipscomb College in Nashville, TN. Elizabeth worked for the telephone company in Clarksville, TN and also taught school before becoming a full-time homemaker.
Elizabeth married Austin P. Leavell, Jr. on September 7, 1952 at the Killebrew family farm near Trenton, Kentucky.
She attended 37th Street Church of Christ in Snyder for many years. In Abilene, Elizabeth attended Hillcrest Church of Christ where she was involved in World Bible School and the Quilting Ministry. She was also involved with Meals on Wheels and looking after many friends.
Her family especially appreciates how tenderly and lovingly Elizabeth cared for her husband through many years of his struggle with multiple sclerosis.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn; her parents; her husband; a daughter-in-law, Cathy Leavell; a brother, Lawrence; and two nieces.
Elizabeth is survived by three children, Janet Jergins and husband Phillip, Lynn Spivey and husband John, and Mark Leavell. Survivors also include grandchildren, Amanda Armstrong and husband Andrew, Matthew Musick and wife Sarah, Josh Jergins and wife Garolyn, Jonathan Jergins and wife Meredith, Kathleen Lee and husband Matt, Susan Spivey and husband Chris Simpson, David Spivey, M’Lea Leavell, M’chelle Reedy and husband Jeremy, and Mac Leavell; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Ramie Neely and husband James, Annette Lee and husband Elmer, and Wilmoth Payne; and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as her beloved care-giver, Dolores Ortiz.
Pallbearers will be Mac Leavell, Matthew Musick, Jeremy Reedy, Jonathan Jergins, Jeff Neely and Philip Lee.
Memorials may be made to Medina Children’s’ Home, World Bible School, or Meals on Wheels.
