Eleanor Hutchison was born in Lamesa, Texas on February 16, 1914. She died on February 15, 2006, one day before turning 92. Her parents OK and Eleanor Jones preceded her in death.
She graduated from McMurry College at age 18 in 1932. Many years later she received a Master's Degree from Hardin Simmons University. She served a year as Miss Abilene.
On December 23, 1936 Eleanor married John A. Hutchison, Jr. in Abilene, Texas. They were married for 64 years before he died in 2001.
Eleanor was active in her community and in her church, First Central Presbyterian Church, for many years. As a leader for Cub Scouts and an officer in PTA, she had an impact on many young people. Her home was a meeting place for all her children's friends. She held offices in the Shakespearean Club, the Pierion Club and the Parva Investment Club and was a member of the Abilene Women's Club.
She was an avid gardener, bridge player and reader. Her needlework was outstanding and sought after. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and saw most of the world together.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband and her grandson, Hadley Wade Hampton. She is survived by her daughter, Eleanor "Bunny" Hampton and her husband Dr. Robert W. Hampton of Sweetwater; two sons the Honorable John A. Hutchison III and his wife Judy Hutchison of Houston, and Dr. David S. Hutchison and his wife Margherite "Nina" Hutchison of Marblehead, MA; five grandchildren Dr. Robert "Tad" Hampton of San Antonio, Helen Levin of Pacific Palisades, CA, Shawn Jones of Austin, Dr. Sarah Hutchison-Weaver of Chapel Hill, NC, and Stephanie Hutchison of Marblehead, MA. Besides 9 great-grandchildren, she is survived by her sister Catherine Baldridge of Round Rock, her brother OK "Buddy" Jones of Lubbock, her cousin Helen Riley and many other relatives and friends. Her companion and friend Maria Jara and her husband Oscar Jara were devoted caretakers.
After a family graveside service at Elmwood Memorial Park, a memorial service will be held at First Central Presbyterian Church, 400 Orange Street in Abilene on Saturday, February 18, 2006 at 11:00 am. The Dr. Cliff Stewart will officiate. Funeral arrangements are being handled by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial gifts be made to the Presbyterian Medical Care Mission, 302 Medical Drive, Abilene, Texas 79601, or to the donor' favorite charity.
