Edythe Virginia James

Edythe Virginia James, 84, died Sunday, October 4, 2009 at an Abilene medical center.

Born in Port Arthur, Texas on January 29, 1925, she was the daughter of Jewell Virginia (Blackman) and Clyde Smith. A retired school teacher, Mrs. James served with her husband doing missionary work for many years for the Church of Christ in various places including Guatemala, Panama, Colombia and Miami, Florida. She also taught school in all of these places.

In 2004, she moved from Miami to Abilene, where she was a member of Southern Hills Church of Christ.

Mrs. James was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Carl James, Jr., on August 28, 2002, and her parents.

Survivors include her son, Harvie James and wife, Rebecca, of Abilene; daughter, Virginia Beth James; brother, Doyle Smith of Pensacola, Florida; four grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 12, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, with Jack Walker officiating. Interment of her ashes will be in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene.
