Edna Gladys Newton

Edna Gladys Newton, 93, passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2006 at a local nursing center. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel, Texas. June 29, 1913, Edna was born in Tye, Texas to John W. Newton and Sallie (Ayers) Newton. She attended school in Tye and graduated from Abilene High School. She also attended Gail Business College. She moved to Abilene from Merkel in 1956 when she began working for Hendrick Hospital. For 23 years Edna worked as a cashier for Hendrick Hospital before retiring in 1979. She was a member of Grace Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Clyde, Clarence, Theo and Carl Newton. She is survived by one niece, Louise Beaird and her husband Charles, and one nephew, Kermitt Newton and his wife Gaye.
