Dorothy Eloise Newman Crowell of Abilene, Texas passed away at age 98 on Monday, March 14, 2016 in Abilene.
Dorothy was born in Roby, Texas to Elmer and Jesse James Newman. She graduated from Abilene High School at age 16 and McMurry College at age 19. After college she taught elementary school in Roby for several years. In 1939 Dorothy married Ray Crowell. She taught Spanish and was librarian at Wylie for 19 years and retired in 1983. She was a founding member of The Abilene Woman’s Club. For over 80 years she was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. For many years her passion was bridge. She was a member of multiple bridge clubs and formed many lasting friendships with fellow players.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her two brothers, Kenneth Newman and Bob Newman; and her grandson, Raymond Lee Crowell.
Her survivors include her children, Richard Crowell (Virginia) of Llano, TX, Nancy Thomsen (Jim) of San Antonio, and Lee Ann Holladay of Santa Fe, NM; sister-in-law, Madie Newman of Abilene; grandchildren, Chris Thomsen of Dublin, TX, Georgia Thomsen (Simon) of Austin, TX, Tedd Holladay (Lindsay) of Austin, TX, Matthew Crowell (Laura) of San Antonio, TX, and Stephen Holladay of Santa Fe, NM; and seven great-granddaughters, Julianna, Sadie, Laney, Landry, Eve, Leyton and Hannah.
She was a beautiful true lady. She loved her children and family dearly.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene, with Dr. Robert Monk officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service. The burial will be private.
Pallbearers will be Chris Thomsen, Matthew Crowell, Tedd Holladay, Stephen Holladay, Bill Newman, and Clay Smith.
