Dorothy Louise Jones "DJ" Chittum, a lifelong resident of Abilene and the Big Country Area, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas.
Her family will be receiving friends for visitation at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene, from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening. At Dorothy's request, her body will be cremated, and a private burial of her cremains will be held at a later date.
The daughter of the late Ether Adella (Eubanks) and Joseph Edison Jones, Dorothy was born in Admiral in Callahan County, Texas, and graduated from Baird High School. She married James Horace "Jim" Chittum on July 2, 1949 in Abilene.
For a number of years, Dorothy worked for Humble Oil & Refining Company. She and Jim owned two ENCO service stations in Abilene, which were sold in 1971. They later purchased a Shell service station at FM 600 and I-20, which they operated until 1979. Dorothy was also the cashier manager at PaPa Bear Restaurant, also at FM 600 & I-20, for five years. She loved to line dance and play Bridge.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Jim Chittum of Abilene; sons, Michael Chittum and wife, Kindra, of Texarkana, Texas, and Gregory Chittum of Abilene; sisters, Jo Esther Jones of Abilene and Goldia Mae Kilpatrick of Ballinger; and three grandchildren, Cody Chittum, April Chittum and Joseph Chittum.
