Doris Ann Smith Whisenhunt

Doris A. Smith Whisenhunt went to be with her Heavenly Father Monday, April 10, 2017. A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 14, at First Christian Church, 1420 North 3rd Street, Abilene, with Dr. Don Wilson officiating. Burial with follow in Potosi Cemetery. Visitation will be held 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 13, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene. The daughter of R.S. and Esther Mae (Fleming) Jumper of Eastland, Texas, Doris was born in the Gorman Hospital on January 5, 1944, a snowy afternoon. She was blessed with wonderful parents; two sisters, Letha Lee and Joy Marie; one brother, Jimmy Ray; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Doris attended school in Eastland until moving to Abilene where she took a secretarial course. Doris joined First Christian Church in 1967. In her younger years, she loved helping with Bible School. She was an Office Angel for several years and Counter. In later years she served as a Deacon and Elder. She loved her church and church friends. She was secretary and receptionist for her husband, Dr. Bud Smith, at Healthway Chiropractic Office for twenty-one years. They loved travel in the U.S. and Europe. Later after Bud's death, Doris married a good friend of Bud's, Col. (Ret) Bobby J. Whisenhunt. They enjoyed travel, hunting, fishing, horse racing at Ruidoso, NM, and cruising. Her greatest joy was her family. Summer vacations to the Mayan Princess Condos on Mustang Island out of Corpus, was one of her favorite. Preceding her in death were her parents; sisters, Letha Lee Yancey and Joy Grace; brother, Jimmy Ray Jumper; nephews, Johnny Yancey and Shane McAfee; and her wonderful aunts and uncles. Doris is survived by her husband Bobby; son, Ray Dukes and wife Jan; daughter, Tanya Gannaway and fiancé Doug Tucker; step-sons, Tim Smith and Ryan Whisenhunt and wife Lindsey; step-daughter, Kelli Anderson and husband Jeff; grandchildren, Leslie Dukes Anderson, Brannon Gannaway and wife Ivana, Kyle Gannaway and fiancé Marisol, Jordan Gannaway, Cody Slatton and wife Darcie, Chelsea, Erin, Shannon, Luke, Merrit, Ari; and great-grandchildren, Alexa, Layla, Gavin, Domanic, Callie, Brylee, and Autumn. Survivors also include a brother-in-law, Stanley Whisenhunt and wife Dorothy; nieces, Diane Austin and husband Mickey, and Deanna Yancey; nephews, Jimmy Yancey and wife Nancy, and Randy McAfee and wife Linda; and her wonderful cousins, LaVon, Ted, Gene, Dwayne and Dan Snider. Doris’s family expresses thanks to her thoughtful friends and neighbors, and special thanks to her kind, caring doctors, Dr. Jose Vega, Dr. William Haynes, and Dr. Ren Zhang.
