Don Walton Collins, 83, of Abilene, TX, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 in Abilene. A Visitation and remembrance will be Saturday July 30, 2016 at Haskell Funeral Home from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. A private burial will be at a later date.
Don was born in Breckenridge, TX on February 24, 1933. He attended school in Haskell and graduated from Haskell High School in 1951. Don met the love of his life, Bobbye Jack and they married in 1953 in Biloxi, Mississippi and they celebrated their 63rd anniversary in May. He joined the Air Force in 1953 and served in Korea. Don joined the Texas Department of Public Safety in 1957 and was employed as a Texas State Trooper for 37 years. Don also served as an honorary Texas Ranger. He was a master mason in the masonic lodge and was past master of the Memphis, TX. and Haskell, TX. lodges. Don always had a story to share and he never met a stranger. He loved to watch movies and always had a humorous movie quote to interject at just the right moment. Don loved his family and even through his long illness he always found humor in life.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Walton (Red) and Alma Collins and infant son Larry Don Collins.
Don is survived by his wife, Bobbye, son David Collins of Haskell, daughter Lindy Barefoot and her husband James of Abilene, grandsons, Zachary Collins of Mobile, AL., and Collin Barefoot of Tucson, AZ., granddaughter, Ashley Skinner and husband Jon of College Station, TX, one brother, Wallace Wooten and wife Ruby of Haskell and multiple nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorials may be made to favorite charities in lieu of flowers.
