Detra Kaylene Howell (Miss Detra), 48, died Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at a local hospital. Born on July 28, 1963 in Salinas, California, Detra was the daughter of Pat and Zelma (Randolph) Howell. She was a former resident of the Corpus Christi State School, returning to Abilene in 1995 to be closer to those who loved and cherished her. She was a former resident of Soma Resources, Abilene Nursing and Rehab, and most recently Homestead Nursing and Rehab in Baird, Texas. Detra is survived by sisters, Janise Riddell, Marsha Sanders and Norma Verner all of Abilene, Nancy McBride of Dudley, Edna Gunn of Carterville, Missouri, and Joan Stark of Austin; brothers, Mike Gunn of Carterville, Missouri, and Gary Howell of Abilene; and many left to cherish her memory. She was preceded in death by her mother, Zelma Howell; father, Pat Howell; and brother, Jim Gunn. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at the Salvation Army Church with Sergeant Toby Romack officiating. Burial will follow in Hawley Cemetery directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Nancy Hulit, Lisa Sherrill, Darla Stark, Kari Verner, Brandy Verner and Kristy Verner.
