Dene Strawn McLeod passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2024, in Abilene, Texas, just one month after her 100th birthday celebration attended by a host of wonderful friends and her loving family.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at the Trent Cemetery.
Dene was born in Trent, Texas on Nov. 1, 1924, to John and Irene Strawn. She graduated from Trent High School where she excelled at basketball. Her THS Gorillas team made it all the way to the state championship tournament. Dene graduated from McMurray University where she was a member of Gamma Sigma, the Art Club, and the orchestra. She then taught school in Plains, Ozona, and finished her career at Trent.
In retirement, Dene and husband Spud, loved their fishing retreat on the Colorado River with friends Bill and Ruby Toombs. She had a wide variety of hobbies and interest ranging from arrowhead hunting with her Aunt Lucy Steen to keeping a perfect home and being a wonderful cook. Dene loved to follow sports, especially the Texas Rangers. She continued to read and work her crosswords her entire life.
Spud and Dene were long time members of the Trent and Wylie Baptist churches.
Dene was preceded in death by husband, H.H. 'Spud' McLeod, parents, John and Irene Strawn, and sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy Joe and Billy Joe Bowers.
She is survived by sons, Robert Seago (Margie LaFleur), Tom McLeod, and John McLeod. Also grandchildren, Taylor Seago (Catherine Coleman), Whitney (Lance) Will, Brooke Archibald, Matt (MacKenzie) McLeod, and Austin McLeod (fiancée Lindsey Webster) and five great grandchildren.
The family extends sincere thanks to her special caregiver and friend Erlinda De Le Cruz. We would like to thank the compassionate professionals of Hendrick Inpatient Hospice for the wonderful care they provide to Dene and her family during these last days.
