Delton Ross Simmons

Delton “Jeff” Ross Simmons, 77, formerly of Midland, Texas, passed away Friday, January 24, 2014 at an Abilene medical center. Born in Jones County, Texas, on February 19, 1936, Jeff was the son of Elsie Golden (Garvin) and John Henry Simmons. He married Vonda Jean Lewis on September 1, 1956 in Lovington, New Mexico. In Midland he worked for Permian Basin Petroleum Museum for eight years in building maintenance, and was a member of Alamo Baptist Church. He moved from Midland to Abilene in 2012. Jeff was preceded in death by his son, Randy Ray Simmons; father, John Henry Simmons; mother, Elsie Golden Simmons; and two brothers, Norwood Simmons and Donlon Simmons. Survivors include his wife, Vonda Jean Simmons of Abilene; a niece, Sherry Ferguson and husband Jackie of Brownwood, Texas; nephews, Keith Lewis and wife Alicia of Brownwood, Russell Lewis and wife Jo of Las Vegas, Nevada, Ty Lewis and wife Christy of Zephyr, and Sean Lewis and wife Erica of Brownwood; and several great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 26, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd. in Abilene with Bro. David Barnum officiating. Burial will follow in Smith Cemetery near Crosscut, Texas in Brown County.
