Delbert “Del” Cheek, 75, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Abilene Regional Medical Center.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, December 15, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 16, in Elmwood Memorial Park, 5750 Hwy 277 South in Abilene, with Dr. Jeff Reid officiating. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Born in Breckenridge, Texas on March 17, 1938, Del was the son of Mattie Ozella (Dendy) and John Robert Cheek. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and an entrepreneur. He was a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church in Abilene.
Del married Lynne Petty on February 12, 1988. He was a loving father, grandfather and husband. An avid sports fan, especially baseball, he was a baseball coach and played from Little League through Semi Pro. Del supported all of his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids at their individual games. He could be heard anywhere on the field and beyond.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Bobbie Cheek, and a sister Della Britton.
Del is survived by his wife, Lynne Cheek of Abilene; three sons and their wives, Gary Cheek and Andrea, Brian Cheek and Kay, and Robert Cheek and Kim, all of Abilene; stepson, Phillip Lane Petty and wife Michelle of Breckenridge, TX; a daughter, Lisa Mitchell and husband David of Aledo, TX; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Laura Lynne Cook and Jim of San Antonio, TX, and Lisa Carole Clements and Darrell of Lawn, TX; sister-in-law, Barbara Cheek; 21 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
