David J. Varner

David Jeffery Varner, 54, of Abilene, passed away on Friday, March 3, 2017 in Abilene, Texas. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. on Monday, March 6, 2017 at Southern Hills Church of Christ located at 3666 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene, TX 79605. Funeral services will be held at 10 A.M. on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at Southern Hills Church of Christ. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park located at 5750 US Highway 277 South in Abilene. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene. David J. Varner was born in Abilene, TX to Aaron Lee and Dorothy Nell Varner on July 14, 1962. He went to school in Abilene, and at 16 he met and went on his first date with Cindy L. Brabbin. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1980 and after graduation attended two years of college at Abilene Christian University. He then entered the Abilene Police Academy, Class 31, on March 19, 1985 and became a police officer. “Vern” worked in Narcotics, Youth-Missing Persons Division, and Patrol with the Abilene Police Department for 32 years. Even with David’s extensive civic work and service, there was nothing more important in his life than his devotion to God and his family. He married the love of his life, his high school sweetheart, his “C” on May 24, 1986. No one loved better or more completely. He was also an integral part of his church home, Southern Hills Church of Christ. At the church he made a lasting impact working with the children and youth ministries. He was a devoted servant of God, a faithful and loving husband, and the rock of the Varner family. He was preceded in death by his father Aaron L. Varner on May 1, 1980. He is survived by his wife Cindy, daughters Jessica Varner and Rachel Varner Evans and her husband, Bradley Evans; mother Dorothy Varner; and brother Gary Varner and his wife, Linda Tuttle Varner. Donations in memory of David may be given to Southern Hills Church of Christ Youth Ministries (3364 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene, TX 79605) and Lohn Church of Christ (1635 County Road 316, Lohn, Texas 76825). The Varner family wants to extend a special thanks to the Southern Hills Church of Christ family, the Hillcrest Church of Christ family, the Abilene Police Department family, and the Abilene Police Officers Association, all who as he put it “lifted him up”.
