David Willard Newcombe

David Willard Newcombe, 83, died Monday, April 9, 2012 at an Abilene medical center. Born in Blanchard, Oklahoma on March 10, 1929, David was the son of Rose Mary (Yates) and Arnold E. Newcombe. A 1947 graduate of Lawton High School in Lawton, Oklahoma, he graduated from Oklahoma A & M in Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1951. He entered the U S Army in 1951, and was discharged in 1954 as a 1st Lieutenant. David married Sue Latham on September 2, 1953 in Vernon, Texas. He spent most of his married life in Abilene, having moved to Abilene in 1954 as an employee of Conoco. Most of his working career was with Sears and in real estate sales. His daughter, Nancy, was born in August, 1960. Since 1958, David had been a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and taught in Sunday School. His parents and one brother, Eddie Newcombe, preceded David in death. David is survived by his wife, Sue Newcombe of Abilene; daughter, Nancy Newcombe of Austin; brother, Ralph Newcombe of Lawton, OK; and sister, Mary Margaret Neely of Houston. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church with Dr. Jeff Reid, Rev. Stan Allcorn and Pastor Jack Ridlehoover officiating. A private interment will be in Elmwood Memorial Park directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Memorials contributions may be made to the Building Fund at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church, 701 South Pioneer Drive, Abilene, TX 79605.
