David Lee Haywood of Snyder, Texas passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2020 in Abilene, Texas surrounded by family. Funeral services will be at 1 pm Saturday, May 30, 2020 at the Wylie Baptist Church, 6097 Buffalo Gap Rd. with JD Hinson, officiating. A time of visitation will follow immediately after the service. Interment will be held at 11 am Monday, June 1, 2020 at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road Abilene, Texas 79606. Dave was born in Amherst Texas to Lee and Minnie Haywood on July 17, 1925. He attended school in Blackwell, Texas prior to joining the US Navy on February 3, 1943. He served as a Seaman First Class on the USS Portland from May 1943 to December 1945. Dave married the love of his life Ouida Best on March 7, 1948 in Portales, New Mexico. They moved to Snyder in 1950 where they raised their five children. Dave worked for Chevron Oil Company for 36 years before retiring in 1986. He was also a member of and served as a deacon at North College Avenue Baptist Church for many years. Dave was a God-fearing man, generous and caring, the type of man that would give you the shirt off of his back or help someone out with his last dime. He was a beloved husband, father, and proud Papaw to 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ouida; his mother and father, Lee and Minnie; one brother, Rufus Rawls; his sister, Patsy Humble; one granddaughter, Jennifer Birdwell; one grandson, Jared Foster; and one great-grandson, Logan Lay. He is survived by four daughters, Druecilla Birdwell and husband Jerry of Abilene, Christine Foster and husband Buddy of Abilene, Jeana Blythe and husband Dale of Potosi, Brenda Adames and husband Joe of Snyder; and one son David Earl Haywood and Iva Haywood of Snyder. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dave’s grandsons: Tanner Means, Ty Means, JD Adames, Stephen Adames, Clint Haywood, and Damien Haywood. The family suggest memorials be made to Kindred Hospice, 1665 Antilley Rd. Suite 300, Abilene, Texas 79606 or a favorite charity of one’s choice.
