Daniel Boone

1913 — December 25, 2006

Daniel Boone, FAIA was born in Waco, Texas December 4, 1913, the son of the late Harry Holmes (Pop) Boone and Clara Whiteman Boone. He was preceded in death by two brothers, sister and wife Margaret Conant Boone. Dan graduated from High School in Ft. Worth, Texas. He received his architectural education from the University of Texas at Austin and fly fishing expertise from his father, a passion that lasted throughout his life. He entered the service of our country in 1943, commissioned a captain in the U.S. Army and spent time in an Engineering Battalion in Europe in World War II. He and William A. Pope, established an architectural firm in 1956, later known as Boone Pope Wheeler responsible for the design of many prominent buildings throughout West Texas including the Taylor County Coliseum, Abilene City Hall , Abilene Civic Center, Mann and Madison Junior High Schools, and significant buildings on the campus of McMurry University and Hardin Simmons University. Boone was active in the Texas Society of Architects, serving in all offices including president in 1967. He served as a director representing Texas on the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Architects and was named a Fellow in 1968. He received the prestigious Pitts Award from the Texas Society of Architects for distinguished service to the profession in 1972, the highest award given to one of its members. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the National Council of Registration Boards, serving as its president in 1971-72. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest. He is survived by his wife Mary Ellen of 24 years, sons Daniel Jr. and wife Ann of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Mark and wife Julie of Houston; grandchildren, Kade, Matthew, Rhoda, William and great grand children Ashley and Isabella. A memorial service will be held today, Wednesday, December 27, at 2:00 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest, with Rev. Scott Mayer officiating. Memorials may be made to St Johns Episcopal School or Rescue the Animals
