Connie D. Cooper, 77, of Abilene, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 in Keller, Texas. Connie was born in Ballinger, Texas on July 17, 1940 to Elza Harden Hammond and Lou Emma (Bailey) Hammond. She has lived in the Abilene area for 59 years. In 1969, she began working for Hendrick Medical Center, and on August 12th that same year married Gerald Wayne Cooper. Connie could be described as a sweet, little lady with a huge, happy smile. She began working at Hendrick Medical Center when she was 19 years old and has seen the hospital grow from the original building to what it is today. She had a strong work ethic and character. Her career has included excellent attendance, a solid day's work every day and a positive attitude. Connie's job began in housekeeping, cleaning offices and working hard at a job that she took great pride in and truly enjoyed, retiring on February 10, 2015 as an Environmental Service Technician. Her advice to all of her co-workers was "Do your job well and get along with your supervisors. Always do your best work." Connie loved to read, work puzzles and do cross stitching. She also loved shopping. Anyone that ever met her fell in love with her. She was always kind and loved everyone. She was quiet and a good listener. Connie loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She also had a great love of animals. Connie enjoyed going to church and loved the Lord. She was a member of Oldham Lane Church of Christ in Abilene. She was a special angel on earth. Connie was preceded in death by her husband on June 28, 1991; her parents; one sister, Frances McElroy; one brother, Joe Hammond and brothers-in-law, O.L. McElroy and Dale E. Keele. Survivors include a sister, Kathleen Keele of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; two brothers, Everett Hammond and Wayne Hammond both of Fort Worth; special nieces, nephews and her church family; as well as special friends, Brenda Jewell and Carol Hutchin. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Monday, November 20, 2017 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Oldham Lane Church of Christ with Chris McCurley officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Ballinger at 2:00 pm. Memorials may be made in Connie's honor to Oldham Lane Church of Christ, 5909 Oldham Lane, Abilene, Texas 79602.
