Born on August 24, 1913 in Cyclone, Texas, Clara Geistman Weir died at age 96 on December 28, 2009 in Abilene, Texas. She is survived by two children, Warren Weir of San Antonio and Karen (Steve) Henderson of Longmont, Colorado, 5 grandchildren (Scott and wife Karrie, Conn, Chuck, Bruce, and Carren), one deceased grandchild, Jack, and 5 great grandchildren, ( Rani, Patrick, Brandon, Jordan, and Azalea) .
At age 14 Clara moved to Abilene with her parents, Albert and Minnie Geistman, and her siblings Gladys (Hall) and J.L. Her parents were first generation German immigrants. Clara graduated from Abilene High School at age 16 in 1929, and from Hardin Simmons College in 1932. She later acquired a Masters Degree in Education from McMurry University. She married J. Gordon Weir in 1938. Her husband preceded her in death by 53 years. For 29 years Clara taught music at Travis, Alta Vista, and Bonham Elementary schools. She shared her love of music and inspired hundreds of Abilene school children. She played organ and piano for Central Presbyterian Church services, weddings, and funerals for over 30 years. Clara was a member of the Abilene Women's Club, PEO, and the Abilene Music Club.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, January 2, 2010 at Elmwood Memorial Park, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am at First Central Presbyterian Church, 400 Orange Street. Dr. Cliff Stewart and Rev. Janice Six will officiate. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
Clara will always be remembered for her loving and playful spirit, and her infectious laugh. In lieu of flowers she would want contributions to be made to The Presbyterian Medical Mission, or the First Central Presbyterian Church Music Department, 400 Orange St., Abilene, Texas 79601.
