Christine Ledford Hodges died on Monday, June 27, 2016 at Mesa Springs Healthcare. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday, July 1st at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene. Graveside Services will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 2nd at Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Ritter officiating.
Christine was born on October 13, 1928 to Mack and Anna (Flick) Ledford near Durant, Oklahoma. After high school graduation in 1946, she moved to work in Dallas, TX, where she met her future husband, Lessie T. (Leck) Hodges. They were married on June 25, 1948. They were both of the Baptist faith.
After her husband was recalled to active duty in the U.S. Army in 1950, during the Korean Conflict, they lived in Lebanon, Missouri, near Fort Leonard Wood. After he was discharged, they moved to Weatherford, TX, in 1952, where their first two children, Karen and Kent, were born. After the opening of Dyess Air Force Base, Christine and her family moved to Abilene, TX, where her husband was employed at Dyess.
Christine was subsequently employed as a Clerk – Stenographer in the 819th Air Division at Dyess, where she was chosen to receive the First Sustained Superior Performance Award in 1957. She later resigned to become a stay-at-home mother. Her youngest son, Kyle, was born in Abilene.
In 1964, Christine was employed by the Railroad Commission of Texas. After 27 years at the Commission, she retired in 1991.
Christine enjoyed dealing in and collecting antiques, also caring for her plants, flowers and cactus garden. She and her family moved to the Denton Valley Community in 1973 in Callahan County. Later, Christine moved near Clyde, TX, in 2004.
Preceding Christine in death were her parents, her husband in 1991 and four brothers, Bobby, Jimmy, Joe and G.C. Ledford. She is survived by daughter Karen (Robert) Grimes of Buffalo Gap, TX, son Kent (Lena) Hodges of Belen, NM and son Kyle (Vera) Hodges of Weatherford, TX. One brother, Ed Ledford of Carlsbad, NM survives. Grandchildren include Christy (Jim) Lemons of Springtown, TX, Bobby (Darby) Grimes of Abilene, TX, Sarah (Jesse) Sanchez of Los Lunas, NM, Kent, Jr. (Lydia) Hodges of Albuquerque, NM, Cassie and Lily Hodges of Weatherford, TX. She had seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family request that any memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, Food Bank of West Texas, or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene.
